The Arabian Oryx
The Arabian Oryx
Are the Arabian Oryx still alive?
The Arabian oryx went extinct 52 years ago in 1970 because of hunting, poaching, etc. Scientists did their best to bring this fantastic animal back to life.
Arabian oryx live in the sandy habitat of Suadi Arabia. They also sometimes get spotted residing in Jordan, UAE, Syria, Bahrain, and more! This creature is mostly known for its ability to go on for long durations without water. They mostly live in deserts, which means not much food and water around so they have to keep on moving until they find a place filled with enough water and food to last until the end of the week at least.
They have long sharp horns which protect themselves from predators. The horns also absorb as much sunlight as they can so that they can have somebody warm in the cold winter. The oryx's fur also usually becomes thick when the winter season arrives
Arabian oryx became extinct when in the 1970s people started hunting them down as a source of food. Their long beautiful horns tempted the people, so they would hunt them down to cut their horns for accessories. Without their horns, they don't have much to defend themselves with. Moreover, people poached and killed these oryx until extinction.
After extinction, many organizations came together to bring them back. Many tests and breeding were done between animals. After around 20 years their mission was successful! They managed to bring around 1000 Arabian oryx back to life. Now in 2022, there are 1200 oryxes and 6000-7000 oryxes are being held captive in Oman.
